Tulsa Public Schools' Tulsa School Pride Race and Health and Wellness Festival will take place Saturday, Nov. 14 at the Guthrie Green in Downtown Tulsa. This is the 15th year for the run, which is presented by GlobalHealth.

Runners can register online at tulsaschoolpride.eventbrite.com or download and send in a registration form and entry fee to Tulsa Public Schools, Athletic Office, 3027 S. New Haven Tulsa, OK 74114. Entrants can also register at Academy Sports & Outdoors, 6120 E. 41st St, beginning Nov. 9 or at 7 a.m. at the event.

Runners are encouraged to represent their school by wearing school colors, shirts, or athletic gear. The school with the most participation will win $300 in physical education equipment.

The fun begins with the 5k Bike Ride at 8 a.m. The 5k begins at 8:30 a.m.; and the 1 mile fun run/walk begins at 8:45 a.m. The annual Mascot Dash will be at 8:35 a.m.

This year there will also be Fitness classes on the Guthrie Green with Zumba at 9:30 a.m., Bootcamp at 10:30 a.m. and Yoga at 11:30 a.m.

All proceeds will benefit the Tulsa Public Schools physical education programs.

 


 

Youth At Heart starts comprehensive afterschool program at Whitman

Youth At Heart, a local non-profit focusing on after school enrichment, has been awarded a grant worth almost $1 million over five years for work with students and parents at Whitman Elementary.

The grant is from 21st Century Community Learning Centers program of the U.S. Department of Education, which focuses on providing assistance to students in meeting state and local student performance standards and opportunities for academic enrichment.

Youth At Heart will use the grant to provide a comprehensive afterschool program at Whitman, which will include tutoring and STEAM -- science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics -- based activities. In addition to providing services for students, parents will be given opportunities to engage in literacy training and educational development for the family.

The program is scheduled to begin on Nov. 10 with a Lights On and Kick Off Party at 6 p.m.

Memorial High School's vocal music department, under new direction this year, will present "Simple Gifts: Songs to Illustrate Our Lives" in concert on Nov. 10.

Exploring music of reflection and celebration, the concert will soothe listeners' souls and leave them rejoicing in the power of the human voice.

"Simple Gifts" is at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 10, in Call Hall Auditorium at Memorial, 5840 S. Hudson Ave. It is free and open to the public.

Kevin Pearson is Memorial's new vocal music program director.

Transfer applications now open

Applications for second semester transfers and 2016-17 magnet school transfers are now available.

Applications for 2016-17 magnet school transfers can be completed online. Parents and guardians can visit the "Magnet Schools" tab at www.tulsaschools.org/transfer for transfer instructions and to submit an application. Elementary student can apply for one magnet school. Secondary students can apply for a maximum of two magnet schools/programs, which cannot be from the same category of magnet (academic and lottery). Required documents can be uploaded to the application site or brought to the Tulsa Public Schools Enrollment Center, 2819 S. New Haven Ave., to be scanned.

Magnet applications are due no later than 4 p.m. on Jan. 15, 2016. Parents and guardians may visit the Enrollment Center for assistance filling out the online application, including using a TPS computer.

Applications for neighborhood school transfers for the Spring 2016 semester can be downloaded at www.tulsaschools.org/transfer or picked up in person at the Enrollment Center. The deadline for applications is 4 p.m., Dec. 4.
